Russian singer-songwriter Aleksandr Gradsky has fronted a few bands, most notably Skomorokhi, but he is probably best known as a solo artist. He played a leading role in introducing rock music to Russia, and has also performed in opera. His huge voice is well adapted to singing with orchestras, rock bands,  just his guitar or even a capella.  Wikipedia says he has a three and a half octave range, which we've discovered is actually an underestimate.

He shows off some amazing control from 3:40 onwards here:

Not a bad pair of lungs for a smoker. He usually does similar improvisations with that song. In case you want to hear other examples, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=u1vug8Ogpz0#t=235s http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=cWJ4I-labKc#t=228s

He composed this one and co-wrote the lyrics - in English:

And here's a song that will be familiar to some around here:

This one? Good call - he also hits a couple of C♯5s, so I've added it there.

Aleksander actually reminds me of this Russian tenor

Although Aleksander's voice is slightly darker. Their placement of voices is very similar. Aleksander being a slightly darker light lyric tenor and Ivan being a lighter one

Nice to see a thread for him being made. I remember you bringing him up in DDD, and he is indeed amazing.

Great performance. I hope we're not going to start listing his A4s - that could end up a long list Laughing I've added the highest and lowest from that performance though.

Yes, it was J-Club who introduced me to him on DDD. He posted this song and I was awestruck. Btw was it you who added Yesterday?

Russia's answer to Roy Orbison. For some reason, I thought Aleksandr was already dead... Luckily it turns out he isn't!

Also, holy wow at the vocal improv! The thing is, he isn't just a fabulous singer, but all-around a mindblowing musician. His guitar playing on "Anti-Perestroika Blues" is killing me... Shocked

I will be pissed off if he dies (or if I do) before I get a chance to see him live. He's sixty-something, overweight and smokes, but maybe his wife keeps him young...

Maybe some day he and Vitas will do concerts close together and I'll have money to go on holiday to hear them both. I haven't heard a bad performance yet from either of them on YouTube, but Aleksandr Gradsky seems in some ways a more exciting live performer: he's not afraid to improvise, whereas Vitas' live performances tend to be extremely similar to the studio versions.
The thing is, he isn't just a fabulous singer, but all-around a mindblowing musician. His guitar playing on "Anti-Perestroika Blues" is killing me... Shocked
This version has some interesting notes (added to OP) as well as great guitar work. He plays a few other instruments too but sometimes his voice is the only one he needs: this song is a tribute to Andrei Sakharov. He first performed it at an awards ceremony only a few days after Sakharov's unexpected death. I wish I could understand all the words.
Btw I'm not sure how best to list Russian song titles. Should I list the Russian spellings to make it easier for people to look them up, or do people prefer transliterations/ transcriptions? Do we want translations if available? I don't want to add them all or the thread might look too cluttered  Neutral

Holy shit! Laughing

Hmmm, that's a great question... Maybe create a [spoiler]-thingy under the notes where you can find the translations/the Russian titles?

Good idea - I'll probably do that later. In the meantime, I could use some help with this one...

1:15 - B5ish? And does it count as sung?
Btw I have only a small fraction of his discography, so some of the notes I've listed from live performances might have studio versions at the same pitch for all I know. I do know he has a studio version of Imagine without a C5: it's one of the most restrained performances I've ever heard from him.
