Fetty Mercury's Singing thread

Post  Fetty Mercury on Fri Jun 24, 2016 1:17 am

Figured it was about time for a singing thread for me. First, a little info about my voice:
Vocal description: Light Tenor, very youthful voice (Age 14!), can imitate lots of vocalists quite well, especially Geddy Lee
Vocal Range: For highs, I can belt easily up to around B4, and can usually go up to D5/E5, but can go up to G5 on good days. On a few spur-of-the-moment occasions, i've gone as high as Bb5. Falsetto takes me up to E6, and whistle up to C7, but I can whistle-scream up to C8. Lows, I sound comfortable down to E3 or so, but can consistently sing down to A2 or so, and sometimes as low as F#2/G2. Fry takes me all the way down to F1, giving me a range of 6 and a half octaves! (Take that Pike Matton)
Here's a cover I recorded on Monday, of Rush's Dreamline.
Dreamline by Rush
I chose that as the first song to post, as it's a pretty easy song to sing. It's not the first cover i've done, though, I have a pretty big archive.
What do you think?

I got horrific flashbacks to my own old recordings, but you're... Really, a lot better than I expected. You're pitchy, as I would expect a 14-year-old to be, but you've got nice sustain and vibrato. Your diaphragmatic support could use a little work since you overshot all of the "We are youngs".

You sound nothing like Geddy Lee, though.

Don't suck yourself off on your own thread. If you can hit those notes well, prove it tastefully!

I agree with everything Interstellar said though, it was better than expected (yay!), but it was rather pitchy, it seemed as if you didn't know which note you were aiming for sometimes, almost as if you had to vibrato into it? I'd also stick with notes you're comfortable singing! The higher stuff was all fine, but you tried to glissando downwards sometimes in the lower parts which didn't really work as your lower range isn't as strong as the rest of your voice (again, don't tell us the notes you can sing, prove it! I'm not confident you'd be able to reliably sing in the second octave...)

This has to be the best thing you've said in this forum so far.

The last two "we are youngs" were deliberately embellished to be higher, to try to add more of a climax.
And I know i don't sound much like Geddy, i'm saying I can imitate him well.

Well then, the 'embellishments' had no relevance to the song's melody, if you want it euphemized so.

Fair enough.
Now, time for a Rush cover haul! I made quite a few Rush covers in October of last year, but they weren't really too good, so today, i recorded some new versions. My voice wasn't fully warmed up, so I started with some less demanding songs.
Subdivisions
Limelight
Mystic Rhythms
The Spirit of Radio
The Trees
Natural Science(Had to use Vocaroo as file was too large for Picosong)
Red Barchetta

Thanks!
What do you think of those long, sustained A4s at the end?
For the "yeah", i was trying to imitate live versions from 1990-1991, like this one

Considering this cover in particular, you're pushing your highs with very little diaphragmatic support.

Take a breath in and aptly prepare for the note by starting to vocalize it 'in advance' so to speak, with enough support you don't really have to push at all. It's very hard to explain through text, and I'm not a vocal coach.

My advice would just be to not upload something unless you know it's the best you can do at that moment in time. If you botched the lyrics, try again?

Really?? I want to be be supportive but you're not giving us a whole lot of opportunities for that...

Firstly, it sounds a bit like you're trying to be Geddy Lee trying to sing like Freddie. You're not holding certain notes on long enough, so it sounds very weird when you're singing a legato line quite staccato.
Secondly, try to avoid scooping up to notes. It's clear you can actually sing them, so try to hit it dead on instead of working your way up to it!
Pitching is quite a big issue for you, perhaps you need to do more warm ups or do more takes? That would also help with certain notes sounded forced because of a closed throat.

You also don't have to upload it as soon as you've done it, it always help to not listen to it for a few days after you've recorded it, so you're sure that it's "great".
