One of the most powerful voices and charismatic singers in J-rock, Atsushi Sakurai is best known as the frontman for prolific visual-kei post-punk band BUCK-TICK. Sakurai has a sensually dark lower register (though it is sometimes easy to mix up his backing vocals with lead guitarist Hisashi Imai, who has a similarly dark but much weightier low register, but is usually limited to the chorus backing vocals. So, do take anything underlined in this thread with a grain of salt, cause I may have misattributed the singer). His highs are normally quite pushed, but his chest voice is very powerful and he somehow seems to be capable of pushing freak falsettos and whistles up into the 6th octave on the odd occasion (generally during live performances), though usually he stays away from his upper register. Sakurai is a prime example of a singer with natural born talent and stage presense. Sakurai’s voice was much higher baritone initially with a weak lower register and chest voice, but matured to the dark, wine-stained baritone sound around 1989 with the release of BUCK-TICK’s 4th album Taboo and has gradually deepened much more subtly with age.

Blue: falsetto
Italics: non-melodic notes
Underlined: notes obscured in harmonies or backing vocals

Displays well the silvery quality to his voice and the falsetto shouts he does

Very nice, subdued performance

Wicked performance of one of their more bizarre songs, featuring some very strange vocals

Grossly incomplete thread, but this guy's discog is well clear of 20 albums, so it'll be a long time before I'm finished and it's been sitting on my computer for ages. But, a necessary post considering this guy is one of the most criminally overlooked vocalists out there.

Is 1:11 a C5 with C6 overtones and how do you tell the difference?

Can anyone for whom this video is not blocked in their country tell me where the slide from 1:36 lands? I'm hearing Bb1 - A1 before it becomes gurgle

well it's a good thing I asked then lol.

For whatever reason the other day, it sounded head voice to me, but I can now hear that a) it isn't and b) even if it was, it's not sustained in anyway

In my experience, they either have 8 or barely 2, there's very little in between
