The RachChallenge down to low, low E (E1)

Post  oktavism.com on Tue Oct 13, 2015 3:30 am

So, a while back I posted a video of myself singing the famous descent from Rachmaninov's 5th mvmt of the All-Night Vigil, which has the basses drop to a Bb1 on a slow, descending minor scale.
Since then, it has become a "thing" on the net, with people hashtagging #RachChallenge on various social media.
http://www.classicfm.com/composers/rachmaninov/news/rachchallenge-bass/

Glenn Miller, basso profundo/oktavist extraordinaire transposed it down a bit, and of course that has inspired various people to pitch it even lower.

Here is my go, covering E2 to E1. The main goal with this challenge is not so much purely how low one can get, but rather how low you can get with good volume! Since basses in choirs don't have the advantage of individual mics (generally no mics at all with this sort of repertoire), the note really has to be projected.

It's a bit rough, but here it is. My wife fires up her hairdryer right before the final note. Smile

Jesus that was incredible... at least compared to many other people singing that low, like me... for me its pure Fry.
if that was a bit rough i'd love to hear you when your singing isn't a bit rough. i heard nothing wrong with it but i wouldn't know because i don't study oktavism or anything.

Well, I can sing down from E4-E3... does that qualify for this challenge? Lol, because I'm sure this makes every wannabe bass who's ever been on TRP jealousĀ  Razz

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! Nice to hear encouragement every once in a while, since most people aren't so crazy about lows... tenors and high notes get all the attention in most genres!

It actually was originally in B flat (Bb2-Bb1), so I pitched it down for fun. But I've even heard sopranos having a go at this a few octaves up. Smile

I can probably try this one out A2-A1.

The last one you did had more definition on the lower notes. But still fucking amazing. I'm pretty jelly.

Lol, I switch to some sort of fry at Ab2, and it fades out at F2. I can project down to maybe a D3 without a mic.

Let's hear it! Smile It's a fun challenge.

I think the other one I did with a webcam mic and the crappy quality almost made it sound better, if that makes sense. A bad quality mic sometimes smooths out the roughness of lows.

Haha, I forget that I'm bulky by the singer crowds standards. I'm small in the powerlifting/strongman world. Smile

Thanks, though!

That was amazing, the lowest I can do with good volume is probably F2 or E2, one whole octave above Facepalm
