What percentage of men have a "bass" voice?

Doesn't have to be Basso profundo,  could include bass-baritone voices too if you wish.  Just choose what you think is the closest. Feel free to explain where you draw the line and what not.

Is it really necessary to have a poll to ask this question?

The point is to gauge what people's definition of a bass voice is and how common it is.

You guys act like all polls are going to be some deep introspective poll.  None of the polls here are like that.

This is a poll to get a feel of the views of an audience,  which is the point of polls.  You can already see that people's definitions are varying wildly . Perhaps people can view these results and realize the next time some one says "xyz isn't a bass"  it's probably because he has some view where he think only 2% of the population have that voice type.

It's a simple question,  by your definition of 'bass'  voice,  how common is it? Just use your best guess.

Historically the term was used to describe both baritone and basses. There was even a voice type that translated to Bass- tenor. This was true from around 1600-1850. Also maybe someone uses it to describe anyone who sing bass in a choir.... Idk.

I have yet to meet a guy in person who I'd say has a true bass voice so I'd say it's easily less than five percent but there is no real intelligent answer to your question considering nobody can really give an accurate percentage.

Well it's not that hard to get a percentage within some certain percentage. The reall issue is that there is no objective standard for bass, and one man's bass is another's baritone. If one person thinks it's 2% and the other 20%, it's clear they aren't talking about the same voice type. That's what I wanted people to see and maybe discuss.

Actually did 50% because a great majority of all males are baritone. As they age, they edge their way closer and closer to basses, so the majority of all males at some point reach the Bass-Baritone line further down. They may not be hardcore basses, but you find they can eventually hit more bassy notes and have a much more bass-like timbre, which to me is a very important facet to bass singing. A tenor's F2 is much different from a bass's F2.

Bass-baritones technically are basses, just the highest subvoice in the fach.

I'd say about 10% are true-born basses with the full bass timbre and color.

Edit: I'd also like to say I think this was a great thread idea and the poll wasn't a bad idea. It's nice to see the subjective thoughts of others on this.

When I was in a college choir something like 70% of young guys were baritones, and we had only 1 guy who could truly sing bass out of like 50 guys. We had about 10% developed tenors and about 20% of guys borderline tenor/baritone and would settle with age. Any of the baritones who had access to their high range and sounded decent were shoved into the Tenor section. Our Bass section ended up being HUGE still. Although all the really good real tenors and basses got taken by professional choirs, so... I'm sure a few of the baritones would settle into basses or bass-baritones when they got older, but not at this age.

On a side note, the Soprano section was HUGE as well...
