I could always see Freddie Mercury as a basso profundal in his later years

You really pulled the Freddie Mercury meme right out of the dark ages of TRP2, even though that's where it belonged.

Jon Anderson doesn't really have that high of a voice. He uses lots of falsetto and light head voice, similar to Barry Gibb. This is one of the few examples where he doesn't:

And I wouldn't say Robert Plant's a high tenor, his voice has more weight to it.

While Jon isn't a super high tenor, I'd say his natural placement is higher than most tenors.

"It is a commonly held misconception that Jon Anderson sings falsetto, a vocal technique which artificially produces high, airy notes by using only the ligamentous edges of the vocal cords; however, Jon Anderson does not sing falsetto." - from his website.
