Wanderlust's singing thread of grandeur

Post  Hopscotch on Wed Sep 16, 2015 3:13 pm

Never got around to actually making one of these threads, so I figured I might finally go ahead with that now. Got a whole bunch of covers from the past nine months to dump here, so I'll try to pace it so that I don't overload you guys with dozens at a time.

First up is one of the hardest songs I've ever covered - "Freaks & Animals" by Rishloo. Damn those G♯4-B4 parts in it. Rage

That was some tasteful singing. Smile Nice B4s, man! Cool E5 at the end, too.

Wow Maxo, that was crazy! There's a lot of tonal variation I honestly wouldn't expect from you. Your "dramatic" tone is really ace as always and I love those little "add-and-take" things you do (the subtle variations in volume, rasp and vibrato), you demonstrated being able to do some very well controled singing on the mid-high area (above E4) and those ending highs were something that I DEFINITELY wouldn't expect you to do - that metalic roughness was pretty Halford-like.

A criticism I have is torwards the harsh vocals. I believe you're not entirely used to doing them because have this kinda sloppy feel. What I hear from it is that you're doing the classic ol' horrendo canto fashion (aka pulling chest and adding distortion) and you don't seem to be adding much of your "regular voice" on it (a sign that you're doing the healthy way) but you're not adding much diaphragm breathing, resulting in a honestly sloppy, amateurish and frankly emotionless sound to your growls. There were some minor issues with the recording (some "p" sounds really exploded and there were a couple of ocasions where you hit the mic with something), but nothing too big.

Overall, excellent job!

Welp, looks like I've sucked at keeping this thread updated, but to mark my return from an unofficial forum hiatus, here's another recent cover by me, this time of Type O Negative's "Nettie" - http://picosong.com/b4Hd

Thanks to everyone who reviewed my last cover for their kind words!

Wow, that bassy'ness. You nailed the intro like it was nothing lol. The rest of the song was good, like always. You remain one of my top 10 best Trp singers, for all that it's worth lol. The only gripe I have, which is small, is that your vibratto can sound a bit awkward at times. That's just my personal opinion though, so who really cares Razz Awesome job Maxim!

Haven't recorded anything in about six months now, so here's a cover of "Psycho" by Muse.

inB4 Timi posts in this thread just to complain about that song choice

Probably because the B♭4s in that song are impossible to do justice to Sad

Your voice was well suited for this. Nice dramatic singing, and the fucking psycho part was pretty spot on. The only problem were those growled vocals, which just sounded a bit awkward and how low the music was in the mix. Thats's just a personal gripe though. You should cover Dead Star if you ever get the chance.

Yeah growls have never been my strong suit, but I figured I'd go for something a tad more aggressive than the original version during that part, where he just whispers it instead. But thanks, glad you liked it! What artist is Dead Star by?

Growls just take a bit of practice. I'm sure you'll get them down soon enough. Also, Dead Star is another Muse song.

Here's a new one, "Doctor Vine" by an obscure group called The Big F. Seems like taking a break from drinking did a few favors for my high range. Cool

I listened to some of your cover & I think that you have a good voice mate. Really nice high notes, you never really seems to struggle with those and you have a great mix voice technique.

Really nice voice. I'd love to hear some more low songs from you, however!

Already posted this in the request covers from other users thread, but here's a cover of "I Like Goils" by Type O Negative, per Shikkaku's request last May:
