I was listening to "A Gift Or A Curse?" earlier today, and it's actually quite impressive how smoothly and cleanly he sings up to those G♯4s.

Also, are we sure that his lowest black is only B1? Wondering

Yeah Schaffer is actually a really good singer, I suspect if he were to sing lead in non Sons of Liberty stuff more he could potentially become a favorite of mine. I really dig the tone he got on that C5. Shocked

Are the Frankenstein lows the only notes he has below B1 currently?

I remember his lows were all hellish to pitch, though, so...I dunno if I'm up for it at the moment.

He speaks pretty low on Dystopia ("If you try to resist me...")

The new Iced Earth song Plagues of Babylon has a spoken section in the middle by Schaffer that has some strong B1s and a B♭1.

Starts at 3:57

Am I the only one who thinks the "Frankenstein" E♭2s included in the video sound more like Barlow? That dramatic vibrato… Sad

Chorus vox are definitely Barlow, you can tell by the panning since Schaffer's vox in the verses are in the stereo (left/right) channels while Barlow's are consistently in the center throughout the song (barring some higher harmonies in the chorus), plus only Matt would pronounce "IEEEE" like that.

I thought that for a while too, but it seems odd that Schaffer would do all the lows during the verse and then Barlow takes over the lower part in the chorus, but it does sound quite Barlow ish. Then again the two have similar voices...

We could always just ask Matt on his facebook.Very Happy

100% Schaffer. It's his delivery style, his timbre, his low resonance, etc.

Re: Jon Schaffer

Post  Sandblasted on Sun Nov 10, 2013 5:08 pm

Well, upon further listening, the background vox were distracting me a bit in retrospect, the diction in the center channel isn't as as pronounced as I thought before, so I'm pretty much 50/50 now. Matt can sometimes have a similar low resonance if you compare it to the brief lower layer in "Damien" ("Set in motion now"....)

If somebody could find one of the 12 known live versions that'd probably solve all our problems.

According to Sherick the live version is Schaffer so it's probably him. I mean he could just be doing that because his lows are louder live or something and it's not complete proof but at that point it's kind of nitpicking.

The live version also sounds exactly like the way it is on the album. Unless that's just a coincidence.

For those of you that were saying Schaffer should/could do the lead vox in Iced Earth

Michael Poulsen, Russel Allen and Stu (I think? some of those highs sound like his) also sing. It's not entirely Jon.
