Adrian Smith

Post  axisundone on Thu Jun 04, 2015 9:54 am

Associated acts: Iron Maiden, A.S.A.P, Psycho Motel, Primal Rock Rebellion, Bruce Dickinson
Voice type: Baritone
Vocal range: E2 - A5

Significant high notes:

  • A5 ("Misunderstood")
  • D5 ("Silver And Gold")
  • C♯5 ("The Lion", "Kid Gone Astray")
  • C5 ("Silver And Gold", "Misunderstood")
  • B4 ("You Could Be A King", "Fallen Heroes", "Fighting Man", "Wish Your Life Away", "She's A Roller")
  • B♭4 ("After The Storm", "Down The Wire", "Blood On The Ocean")
  • A4 ("Reach Out", "Silver And Gold", "Blood On the Ocean", "Watch Me Walk Away", "Live To Learn")
  • G♯4 ("Reach Out", "Kid Gone Astray", "The Lion", "She's A Roller")

Significant low notes:

  • G3 ("After The Storm")
  • E3 ("You Could Be A King", "Silver and Gold")
  • B2 ("My Lady')
  • E2 ("Down The Wire")

Best known as a guitar player in Iron Maiden, Adrian Smith has done a few projects outside of his main band and shown himself to be a talented songwriter and a competent lead vocalist with a pleasing gritty timbre. He mainly stays in the E4-B4 area, rarely over-singing or pushing his capabilities...with the exception of a very surprising A5 in A.S.A.P song 'Misunderstood'. There are lots of harmonies around D5 - F5 on ASAP's Silver And Gold album but two other band members are credited for backing vocals so I thought it best not to bother with those. The E2 is in a harmony but I do think it's Adrian.

Have notewatched all the A.S.A.P material and am currently working my way through the stuff he did with Urchin. I'll get round to doing the Primal Rock Rebellion album, even though it's kind of terrible. That plus the one Maiden song he did lead vocal on ("Reach Out") covers everything this guy has sung on that I'm aware of. Watch this space.

May wanna replace the parentheses in between song titles with commas. It'll look better.

Excellent thread idea!

Adrian's a surprisingly strong singer, "Reach Out" is certainly amazing. He's got that Sambora-esque blues howl to his belting, and you can hear his vibrato has been downright influenced by Dickinson himself. Why Steve Harris chooses to "sing" some of the audiblr live harmonies instead of Smith is beyond me... "Can I Play with Madness"? Durrr

Glad you fixed up the formatting, though I'd also like to add that it would look better with some ♯s and ♭s Smile

Got some links to the E2 and A5? Surprised

The A5 is here at 3:50. It's short but qualifies as sung for sure:

I'll dig up the E2 later as I'm going out now. But I'm glad this thread seems to be getting some interest!

I like it when Bruce lets Adrian sing the chorus to "Wasted Years" on his own.
