Whole Lotta Love Acapella

Hey guys, I've been a long time lurker of the forums but I've only recently starting posting. I have been singing for about 5 years but I only started to take it seriously in the last two. I'm still an amateur though as I have never been able to afford a teacher. Tell me what you guys think Very Happy

Shocked Damn your voice is awsome! It sounds like Chris Cornell meets Robert Plant meets Layne Staley. Sure you in the same key for some of the clip, but the sound of your voice completely compensates. P.S that E5 was godly

nice voice! loving the gritty highs, sounds like cornell to me. work on your diction/phrasing tho, dont lose crisp pronunciation amidst pulling those chesty high notes, there were times when you sounded like a south park character because of it.

Pretty solid, especially for being a capella. I'd say diction is one of the only things holding you back at the moment, as Benji said.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys Very Happy I never once gotten this positive a response on any other singing forum. I do agree there is something really weird going on with my diction in that clip, I usually don't sound THAT South Parky haha Laughing

Once I am over this cold I will be doing a full song cover of something Soundgarden or Zeppelin. Tiphat

So I have quit smoking weed since that last recording and wow what a difference  Very Happy . Almost every issue I had with my voice disappeared overnight (though I still wish my high range was heavier). I am truly in love with my voice now. I know this clip isn’t perfect I fucked up a couple notes and a few lyrics but I just can’t stop listening to it. I can’t believe this voice is coming out of me, it’s the voice I’ve heard in my head for so long Dance. I don’t have full control over my voice right now because it is reacting a little differently then it did when it was covered in tar and resin. I am excited to see how I will sound in a month when I have gotten used to my sober voice:shock:. Anyways here is the end of Searching for the Ground.

Sorry for these short clips but right now I’m living in an apartment and I don’t want my neighbours to completely hate me  Razz . I’m making a trip to my parents house soon though so I will record you all a full cover when I’m there. For now here is the end of Hunger Strike.

lol nice singing

I liked both the smoking and the non smoking clips

smoking aint all that bad, it depends on what you want from yer voice, not good to combine it with touring though, that'll just permanently damage ur voice

I found smoking made my high range (B4 and up) very shrill and unpleasant and notes above E5 were painful to do and would shut down pretty quickly. Right now my voice feels free and amazing. I like the high notes man haha but if I was a bass I'd probably never stop smoking.

Hell yeah, man!

You nailed those highs in "Hunger Strike"!! That's some shit, right there!!!

I've been a regular pot smoker for 20 years and the biggest way it affects me is if I smoke right before I sing, the cottonmouth and all. If I'm properly hydrated, it'll go away. And of course, when ya just get all tired and don't feel like doing anything....that never helps. Laughing

Well this isn't a cover but whatever. This is an original song I did for a school project this year, I wrote it a few years ago. I actually really like my singing on this, except the ending which needs some work. https://soundcloud.com/yex00/down

Here is my cover of the vocal solo from Reach Down. I don't normally do harmonies, but I think it came out OK. It could definitly use some work though. I just wish my high notes were heavier. https://soundcloud.com/yex00/reach-down-harmonies

You have pretty much the same voice as this guy, just less developed due to your age as opposed to his... Aka. LOVE it! Keep on posting more stuff, your clips so far have been dynamite. The "Down" performance also had a similar vocal quality to young Chester Bennington back in the day with Grey Daze.

What's your singing background like, by the way? How was your high range at the beginning and how did you evolve into this level, discovering the grit and all? Cool

Keep on posting, I'm looking forward to more of your singing!

Well this is a story and a half, but here I go. In 2009 I got into Nirvana, it was the first band I really cared about in my adult life (I was 15). In my youth I loved AC/DC and The Beatles, and I still do, but this was different. This was totally new, so aggressive and beautiful. It made me want to sing for the first time in my life. My brother was a guitarist at the time so I started screaming smells like teen spirit over his playing. Everyone wanted to shut me up so they gave me a bass and taught me how to play the song cause it was so simple. By the end of the day I was singing and playing it. Rasp and everything. My voice sucked though, no pitched control. I eventually got pretty good at bass and joined a few bands. I was in one band that lost our singer, so I took over vocals. I was terrible haha https://soundcloud.com/yex00/midpoint/s-OT8qv

I then joined a thrash band after that, and I started basically screaming nonstop. Every gig and practice was painful, I was hoarse after every show. It sucked. And the band never really liked my voice. While the album was released in 2014 after the band broke up it was all recorded in early 2013. The reason it took so long to get out was cause the producer left halfway through and we had to get someone new to mix and master it. This is my favourite vocal performance from the album, lots of screams https://throneofdeath.bandcamp.com/track/pharaohs-demise there is a whole album to listen to as well

After making the album, in the summer of 2013 i was screwing around with my voice and i found this super high light range. I thought it was just a strong falsetto like Ian Gillan. So I worked on and eventually it developed into the high range you see today. I finally got lessons in early 2015 which helped me finally figure out how to resonate my voice properly. It's actually quite improved from my singing on the down song. I have a project due next week in which I need to record a song. I have a classic rock style song I'll be tracking and you guys can hear my current pipes on it.

So yea the grit was always there, I think because of my colic as a baby. But now I can do it painlessly across almost my whole range (cant do it super low), and i can sing clean in my full range. While the high range took 4 years to find and 2 years to really get good (IMO my D5-G#5 register still needs work, its too light). Before my vocal change around 2013 (from my screamy voice you hear on the last two recordings to the raspy high voice on down) my range was about G2-A4, although anything C4 or higher was really rasped. After finding my high range my range is E2-G#5

Man that was fucking rad!!!
Your tone reminded me of Ken Tamplin's take of whole lotta love! Fucking awesome! You must be a high baritone Right? Or a dramatic tenor, fucking great distortion, I hope it's safe though , awesome job.

Thanks! I am definitly a lower tenor. I used to think I was a baritone before discovering my head voice range. This has led to me having somewhat more robust of a low range for a tenor, but the second octave is still quite uncomfortable for me. I also use signifigant darkening techniques, similar to Layne Staley or Chris Cornell, giving me a tone somewhat darker than an average tenor. Though you can still here that tenor ring come through on the higher notes, even though it is somewhat obscured by the distortion. My brother had a similar tone to me but he is a baritone. You can here him here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dIKLFc-Ntlw As you can here he has a pretty similar distortion, though he uses it more sparingly. I could go on a whole other rant about how my distortion developed.
