The Calling - Wherever You Will Go

Post  Guest on Tue Dec 02, 2014 2:05 pm

I have a lot of trouble with high notes, so chances are there will be trouble in this song too (I'm singing in a lower key so I don't even know if I reach the 4th octave here).
Any comment is welcome.

You seem very uncomfortable and not so confident here. Don't worry about pure note hitting and matching tone at first. Just sing your heart out and then you'll start to feel more confident and grow as a singer

Yeah, it was one of the first attempts for me to sing "higher" after a very long time just singing low / very low. I felt very uncomfortable with those notes indeed, even not being actually high.

My high singing was so heavily criticized in the past that I pretty much lost the confidence.

Another tip from me is while you improve and get confident, don't try to copy the singer you cover. That song is sung by lowering the larynx a bit and it didn't sound natural for you. Just find some songs for a limited standard baritone (I'm sure there's a forum on here) and start slow

What is good about lowering the key of the songs for me is that I get to sing more lows, which is where I feel more comfortable. I also insert a couple where they didn't exist, like that slide at the end. : P

Lows sound strong, have you ever had lessons? Or done exercises to blend in your upper range so you can hit higher notes?

Never had actual lessons, I sing in the bass 2 section in the choir and I'm probably the most heady/disconnected of all members when we have to sing in the D4 area. It's a recurring problem for me so I avoid the 4th octave when covering songs overall.

I hope I have enough money to get decent private lessons in the beginning of next year.

I know the feeling, anything in that range is killer for me.

I know the feeling as well. I have to kinda belt that D (push my chest up above my passagio), and then an E is where it all goes bad. too low to get a good mix and too high to push chest up. The Song Cracklin Rosie by Neil Diamond is great until he hits the E that I fail every time at
