He's more of a baritenor/low tenor, but his mixed voice is so good and chesty that he sounds like a baritone. He also doesn't really push for really high notes and mostly sings in the upper middle of his range. He actually has a really nice head voice that he uses in 21 guns, but he normally uses a strong chest heavy mix.

An observation about his voice was that he only started using his high range rather late in his career (specifically, 21st Century Breakdown).
But could anybody notewatch his collaboration with Norah Jones? I did it once, but then my computer crashed Sad I just haven't got the time to do it now...

Yeah, I can agree with your first statement. I also think listing him as a tenor is fine. He's just on the low end of the tenor spectrum.

he exhausts on f#4 and i dont think he uses his mixed voice. most of his songs are limited to f#4 and g4, in live he often let the viewers sing high parts like the G4 in let yourself go.

this is deryck whibley singing G4, yes hes a tenor or high baritone i dont know but look ->https://youtu.be/PT97sOeNRCY?t=2m54s

this is billie joe singing f#4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ0xAz4NaDw&feature=youtu.be&t=1m56s  (he sounds like hes straining on f#4. ive seen many tenors that sing f#4 with relief and ease but i dont know if billie is acting or not.. this looks like a baritone to me
but this is my point of view i'd like to know your opinions too.

I've always thought that he was a really bad tenor.

I still do though.

Yeah, he sang that F#4 with just about pure chest voice and strained. I don't understand how this makes him a baritone... Also, you are comparing him to your average tenor when Billie Joe is a low tenor with a unique voice. In his early years he couldn't/didn't sing that high since he was mostly just pulling up chest voice.

His second passaggio is also around F4, so it would be really easy for him to strain on an F#4. Lots of other tenors have a second passaggio around G4, so they can easily sing an F#4 all day...

I can see how this is confusing as a lot of baritones have a second passaggio at E4, so that would put Billie Joe literally only a half step/semitone above a lot of baritones.

I personally wouldn't be against a baritenor label, but I don't think calling him a baritone because he doesn't sound like other tenors is the right thing to do.

i start to strain on G4, that means my second passaggio is on F#4?

he mostly doesnt sing above F#4, if you were a tenor why wouldnt u use your upper register? maybe he just cant. i'm ok with baritenor but not with tenor.

It might mean your second passaggio is around F#4, but anyone could strain on a G4 without proper technique.

He hits a bunch of B4's in head voice here:

I personally don't mind baritenor or tenor, but I think we should respect the original poster of the thread's decision.

Yeah, I think the vast majority of us agree he's a bad tenor. Although I thought he did pretty decent on the Norah Jones collab.

He's just a lazy tenor, but clearly a Tenor. He improved his singing very much over the years.. but if you guys check his work you'll see that he often sings around F4/F♯4 with ease, maybe he doesn't get much higher than that, but singing in that range for a natural Baritone would be strenuous.

He actually hit a note close to like 30 seconds the last time he was performing live in Helsinki. One of the only things I remember about the gig, to be honest... silent

Honestly, there's nothing magical to that. He just yells in throaty chest voice, which results in that sound...

This video reminded me: every time Armstrong does that crowd 'ee-oo' sing-back thingy, I want to maim a tern.

And this is why TRP2 tried to do away with voice types. Yea he's a low tenor without a lot of training, but it doesn't really matter as he's not a classical singer. I'd just call him a Green Tenor Day.
