Etta James

Post  Starman on Fri May 30, 2014 1:50 am

Voice Type: Alto
Vocal Range: A2-G5 (Research still in progress)

Significant High Notes:

  • G5 (''Down In The Basement'')
  • E♭5 (''I Just Want To Make You Love Me'', ''Stormy Weather'')
  • D5 (''Anything To Say Your Mine'', ''Stormy Weather'', ''Down In The Basement'')
  • C♯5 (''I'd Rather Go Blind'', ''I Just Want To Make You Love Me'')
  • C5 (''At Last'', ''Anything To Say Your Mine'', ''Stormy Weather'', ''I'd Rather Go Blind'', ''Down In The Basement'')
  • B4 (''At Last'', ''I'd Rather Go Blind'', ''Purple Rain'')
  • B♭4 (''Purple Rain'', ''I Just Want To Make You Love Me'', ''At Last'', ''Stormy Weather'', ''Anything To Say Your Mine'')
  • A4 (''At Last'', ''I'd Rather Go Blind'', ''Anything To Say Your Mine'', ''It's a Man's Man's Man's World'')

Significant Low Notes:

  • G♯3 (''At Last'')
  • G3 (''It's a Man's Man's Man's World'')
  • F3 (''Purple Rain'', ''Stormy Weather'')
  • E3 (''It's a Man's Man's Man's World'')
  • E♭3 (''Purple Rain'')
  • D3 (''It's a Man's Man's Man's World'')
  • C3 (''It's a Man's Man's Man's World'')
  • A2 (''Ball And Chain'')

A very, very rough template in order to add more research to. Will hopefully look acceptable enough for Range Stuff when i'm finished  Thumb up
I've seen the range video for her, but i'd like to notewatch her album by album first and then revisit the video to see what I may have missed.

Do you wanna take over this thread? I thought my interest in Etta would grow, but tbh, i'm really not much of a fan and you're right, she deserves better!

That was AWESOME! And she was more than 60 years old when it was recorded? Surprised
When does she sing A2? Those are some epic B2's but I don't think she sings lower than that.
I think you're right about B4's & a D5 too. ☺️

Oh she's a stellar vocalisr! It's just the thought of notewatching a discography that wide and big is a little off putting atm to me (cnsidering how much College work i've got.)
I'd rather focus on my other threads and improving them more and refining them.

uh idk where you're getting that, i figured based on the album cover displayed that it was recorded in her youth

you're right i had misheard the B2 as a A2, thanks for checking

those gritty B4's though Pray

It comes from a Janis Joplin (whom I also love) tribute album released in 2002. ☺️
