Layne died from a speedball of coke and heroin which many people die from rather easily as he was fighting a heroin addiction...he was found dead in an apartment in like 2002 I think it was. As for Kurt he was depressed over how his music was being used, so he shot himself.

Alice in Chains m/

Post  zurgonion on Tue Sep 25, 2012 5:06 pm

For me, Alice in Chains wins by a landslide. Never liked Nirvana. All those bands are gone now. Alice in Chains>Nirvana (just because they brought in the grunge thing)>Soundgarden>Pearl Jam

Soundgarden was always my favourite, followed by Alice. Don't really care about PJ or Nirvana, but I do listen to them sometimes too.
I find it interesting that personal struggles in the lives of some key figures in grunge influenced the creation of some truly amazing music (Cornell was a loner during his early years and was depressed during SG's later years coupled with his hardcore alcoholism, Cantrell had to deal with deaths in his family and friends (Andy Wood, who also affected Cornell greatly) and also drank quite heavily and used antidepressants around Dirt era, Staley used drugs, Cobain used drugs and was depressed, McCready was also an alcoholic/drug user at a few points, etc.)

i dont think layne killed himself, he was very depressed at that time, his life was very sad(just like kurt) and suicide was perhaps an option in his mind, but i think i was accidental, like something that he used to do often on last years, but on that day it just killed him, he was very weak, his body just couldnt take it anymore. (IMO)
anyway he is my biggest idol in music, and AiC is my favorite band, i really love his voice.

Couldn't really tell you because I only listened to a few songs by AIC, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden but I'm a big fan of Nirvana and I listened to their whole discography (with the exception of "With the Lights Out" and some rare songs).
So I guess I'd go for Nirvana. Maybe when I listen a little more of the other band I might change my mind.

It's a tough pick between Pearl Jam and Nirvana for me, but Kurt Cobain has my vote in the end. As much as I love the both of them, Nirvana takes the bullet (to the head Laughing ). Sound Garden and Alice in Chains never did it for me, aside from a few songs here and there.

I had a period of time I was into to each of these bands a fair amount but they don't actively do much for me anymore. However I'd still say Alice in Chains is my favorite. They have more guitar driven songs which is probably why, plus their melodic sense appeals to me a lot more than the others or say Soundgarden who admittedly also have guitar driven songs.

I tried as hard as I could to get into Pearl Jam but they just sound so passive when making music.

... if you say so.

I kind of bounce between Alice in Chains and Nirvana as my favorites. There was also a time when I liked Pearl Jam the best.

I can safely say I like Soundgarden the least (they are good though)

Right now it's probably Nirvana>Alice in Chains>Pearl Jam>Soundgarden. Although when I voted earlier, I picked AiC. Shame most of the grunge bands didn't have time to make more albums.

Well they have that retro sound that doesn't resonate with some people (they've called themselves a seventies tribute band before)... still calling them passive is pretty ridiculous Razz

C'MON nirvana kick ass but they are the least good. I think it goes like this:

Soundgarden > AiC = Pearl Jam > Nirvana

I actually saw Pearl Jam last summer and it probably landed as one of the best moments in my life. It was 45 000 drunk ass people jumping up and down, singing along and Eddie trying to talk Swedish.

Can you really even count Alice in Chains as a Grunge band? I mean most of what they did seem more like an alternative version of metal and rock than actual grunge. Sure, they had a few songs that fit the category though Jerry's riffs just don't fit it.
