Grunge Bands

Post  Big Brother on Mon Sep 10, 2012 5:19 pm

I picked Alice in Chains, though it's a tough pick between them and Nirvana.

I'd go Alice in Chains>Nirvana>Pearl Jam>Soundgarden

Nirvana does it for me, though Soundgarden is pretty close. Couldn't get into AiC though.

I like all of them a lot, hahaha.

Yeah, I'm still pretty unsure about whether I prefer Alice to Nirvana. I think I mostly picked Alice because it was the first grunge band I ever got into.

Soundgarden doesn't sound depressive to me, just menacing.

Layne Staley had a drug overdose you brainless fuck.
And I'm still not entirely convinced that Courtney Love had nothing to do with Cobain's "suicide" either... Angry

They had depressive moments, but most of them were in "Down On The Upside" and "Louder Than Love". Stuff like "No Wrong No Right", "I Awake", "Zero Chance", for example. Hell, most of SG's from Superunknown and DOTUS are pretty relatively "sad" lyrically. I can't speak for Nirvana and Pearle Jam, because I haven't listened to them that much at all, but SG and AiC definitely had some depressive songs. They just weren't the only thing either of them was about.

Overdose eh?
Name it as you like if you think that just sounds better.
Layne did not seem to have much appreciation for his own life when he was getting high day and night and writing about depression in general.
On Kurt Cobain, the man was a junkie and was depressed, he was obsessed with suicide since he was a child when he saw his uncle hanging from a tree, I think I read it in his journals. Love maybe killed him but that does not change anything.

It is really, hahah. Laughing I mean, not only did she have a kid with him (Who now has a restraining order against him In Love ), Cobain pretty much made her (semi-)significant (I know she had a band, but I think she was more famous for being Cobain's mess of a wife, rofl)

I still don't know why Cobain killed himself. I mean, he was doing well with Nirvana (Nevermind being one of the highest selling albums of the 90s), and he had a kid for God's sake. Depression can fuck with your mind, yeah, but I would at least try to consider my family first before even considering suicide... Sad

Hole is a great band, actually. They have some really good songs, and Live Through This is one of the best albums of the 90s imo. It's a shame Courtney is mostly known as Cobain's junkie wife.

Uhhh... Cobain was extremely depressed his entire life and attempted suicide multiple times. Also, he had an undiagnosable gastrointestinal disease that caused him almost constant pain which he medicated with heroin, as well as back problems.

Plus, I don't think the success really meant anything to him. I think the fame honestly only made his frail introverted mind even more depressed. I do feel bad for his kid, but I totally understand why he commit suicide. The guy was in constant pain his entire life.

Obviously none of us know exactly what went through his mind, but sometimes severely depressed people convince themselves that the rest of the world, even their own families, would be better off without them. And I can certainly understand chronic physical pain being a major factor.

I am a watcher (on deviantArt) of a lady who's got lots of chronic health issues. First she said she wanted a good life, that a healthy life, then a decent life... she posts some (goddamn great) dinosaur and comic art from time to time, but she mostly posts about her health and how much her family is helping get through all this. I stopped seriously reading those entries time ago, because they're too depressive and not being able to do anything is terrible. I could understand suicide on an emotional level in these cases, I mean not like it's a right thing, but I can empathize.

Yeah, Soundgarden, AiC and Pearl Jam deal with the big life issues in their music. I think I heard Stone Gossard say songwriting is his way of finding resolution, and I think you can generalize that practice to most grunge bands. I'm so into grunge, and I've been for years, I just love everything about that music. The singers are fucking amazing.

Soundgarden has the songs I like the most, so they get my vote.
