Distorted Tone: Richie Kotzen - Oh My God (I Fucked Up Again)

2:35-

Starts with moderately raspy vocals, until exploding at 3:18.
(Since it's about tone, the short duration of the most relevant part (3:18-) shouldn't be a problem)

Soft Singing: Dan McCafferty - Madelaine

0:52-3:19

Widely non for his often extremely gritty and powerful vocals, this song shows a very different side of Dan's voice.
Delicate soft singing with a hauntingly beautiful tone.

Best Distortion

Townsend: Nothing less than Devin being Devin. A very good example of heavy distortion while keeping a "melodic" line. Not my favorite example of his vocals, but great pick. The sudden cut you made on the clip was kinda anti-climactic and sounded like the selection was hastly-made. Using some Audacity fade-out wouldn't hurt Razz . 4/5

Kotzen: Wow, those lyrics are... quite bad. But on the singing. I like the moderately raspy vocals he was doing, they possessed a good quality, but I didn't liked the ending, they got too screamy and uncontrolled for my taste. 3/5

Best Soft Singing

Tarja: Sweet! I'm definitely not a fan of her operatic stuff, but this was pretty well done. Fits pretty nicely with the soft instrumentation. 4/5

McCafferty: WOOAH, If it wasn't you saying that it was him, I'd definitely not recognize him!! Completely unexpected to hear Dan singing this soft. Really nice sound, although I think Tarja's clip was better. 3,5/5

Yep, certainly should've done that.

Distorted tone
Townsend: Kind of wish you would've used some SYL distortion here but obviously anything related to Devin Townsend is hard for me to dislike. Awesome song and quite a cool section. 3.5/5
Kotzen: Eh this is just typical Chris Cornell imitation distortion and that kind of distortion is pretty far from my preference anyways. Not badly executed although I really wish Kotzen would try to find his own voice with singing as he did with guitar. 2.5/5

Soft singing
Turunen: Oh man this clip got me. Reminds me why I used to dig Tarja so much and why Nightwish are still just one of those bands that stick in my musical vocabulary. Anyways back on topic this is a perfect choice for this category and the tone was awesome. 5/5
McCafferty: Very good singing here in a style I really didn't expect from Dan. A bit standard for the time but by no means less impressive because of that. 4/5

That is his own voice. He's always sounded like that, even before Cornell was famous, probably even before Cornell got that classic voice he is known for now.
So no imitation, they just happen to sound similar.

^ The truth. Sure, they've got similar rasps, but Richie does have his own vocal style, that's for sure.

Best distorted tone:
Hevy Devy - Dammit Devin stop being so ridiculously fucking wicked; I think I've stated most of my thoughts on this clip before, would've been nice to hear a different clip showing off his tone but hey a winner's a winner. 4.5/5
Kotzen - I really like his chestier tone and he has some nice grit, but I don't know if this was the best choice. 3/5

Best use of soft singing:
Tarja - Pretty much what I expect from her, yet it still works pretty well and has a nice "pretty" sound both tone wise and melodically. 4/5
McCafferty - Well this was certainly unexpected, Dan has a nice warmth here and has a very nice and soothing melody as well as phrasing. 4/5

Best distorted tone:
Devin Townsend: There are probably even crazier examples of Devin's distortion but I don't know him enough to say which. This clip is amazing anyway! 4.5/5
Ritchie Kotzen: Some nice rasp but I'm not sure it such a great fit for the category, plus I'm sure there's better examples for him, just going from Timi's video. 3/5

Best use of soft singing:
Tarja Turunen: Really beautiful tone, though its softness is a tad diminished by how high in the mx the vocals are, IMO. Still, I think 4/5 is about right for this.
Dan McCafferty: Very soft tone indeed, a bit weak at times but still rather pleasant. 3.5/5
