Best Low Singing

Kurt Cobain - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Top of The Pops performance 1991

http://picosong.com/YKfw/

Probably Cobain's better and almost only baritone performance, quite pleasant sound.

Best Vocal Climax

Zach De La Rocha - Year Of Tha Boomerang

http://picosong.com/YKfA/

I know you're gonna probably disagree with me on this one but i find every phrase on those verses strongly filled with some kind of calmed power.
Evil Empire's climax.

Best Vocal Climax

I feel that this performance by Tori Amos is all around powerful but the section between 2:41-4:11 is one of the most... orgasmic, devilish and exhilarating vocal demonstrations I've come across and the faces she makes enhances the experience!

Best Low Singing

I feel that Lisa Gerrard has one of the most versatile voices I've ever heard and the vocal from 3:21-4:18 has some of the most amazing low vocal passages I've heard from a woman and the sweeping, soaring end is just chilling.

Low singing
Kurt Cobain: Eh the bottom notes were really forced and he was obviously trolling the audience but not so terrible I guess. 3/5
Lisa Gerrard: Wonderful tone although the low part didn't go as long as I expected. Love Lisa's thick tone in the 3rd octave though. 4/5

Vocal climax
Zach de la Rocha: This didn't strike me as remotely climactic, just Zach's typical rapping which is good but not fitting to the category imo. 2/5
Tori Amos: At first I wasn't so sure, but the sirenic high notes she hits here have a great haunting vibe and in general this whole bit is pretty freaky. Once again Tori proves why she's awesome. 4/5

Low Singing:

Donuts/Cobain - 2.5/5 He's not really taking it seriously, like the others said, and the lows seemed a bit and airy at points, but his tone during the chorus sounded quite pleasant.
Saint/Gerrard - 4/5 I thought that was a man. 'Nuff said really. But seriously, the lows were strong and smooth, and even very operatic at points. Very good.

Vocal Climax:

Donuts/La Rocha - 0/5 Boring, uninteresting, no climax. There are plenty of performances by La Rocha that I would have used for climax ("Killing in the Name" for example) but there was no extra "umph" in that.
Saint/Amos - 4.5/5 Fantastic. Very sexy and terrifying at the same time. The falsetto parts and the grunts and moans just work so well together, contradicting but complimenting. And the live setting makes it even more impressive

Low Singing
Kurt Cobain: Nothing particularly special, just kind of a piss take that isn't that impressive 2.5/5
Lisa Gerard: Great low singing, consistent and beautiful tone in this register. Nice choice! 4/5

Vocal Climax
La Roche: Not much to say about this, really unimpressive and boring 1/5
Tori Amos: Angelic, elegant and beautiful, again a really nice choice 4/5

Low Singing
Cobain: Was not expecting that. Interesting side of his voice, but it sounded very forced on the lows, and not very pleasing to the ear. 2/5
Gerard: Having to change the threshold for "low" obviously, but man is that haunting. I'm impressed. 3/5

Climactic Singing
de la Rocha: Huh? This isn't climactic at all. In fact I'm not even sure if it's the most climactic moment in that song. 1/5
Amos: Wow that's cool. I have no idea what she's doing exactly, but that's some great highs. Tarja esque even. 4.5/5

Then we must think about what's a climax? can you see it from another perspective? i can understand you. I kinda see as irrelevant any kind of shoutery delivered on quite a lot of his live performance because there are lots of them giving some examples: any first album song live. So instead being him a rapper, speacially under his politics point of view a climax for De La Rocha must be without a doubt Year Of Tha Boomerang, i can still think of other songs where he delivers a more powered performance still they lack the complexity and rawness on the lyrics of this one, just IMO. I can understand your perspective though.

You miss the point of a 'climax'. It marks the highest level of tension in the song before the storm calms down again.

Best Low Singing:

Cobain: Decent at times, but there's some pretty bad moments in the "hello, Hello" part. 2/5
Gerrard: Very lows for a female singer, but this is one of the categories where having only female singers hurts you a bit in my eyes. 3.5/5

Best Vocal Climax:

De La Rocha: Not really a climax. 1/5
Amos: Very cool atmospheric singing, but felt like it was missing something to me. 3.5/5

Brendan Perry isn't a female singer lol Sure, I didn't choose him for this round but I wouldn't see why a female voice only would be something negative....

Best Low Singing:

Cobain: It's a fun lil' Morrissey impersonation at times, but Kurt's clearly taking the piss here. He was surely not intending to "fit the norms of a good vocal sound", nor did he really want it with this performance, I'm sure. Something like "In Bloom" would have fit this category better, methinks. 2/5
Gerrard: Wow, what a dramatic sound. Great voice, combined with a great song for a greater effect. 4/5

Best Vocal Climax:

De La Rocha: Not a climax. 1/5
Amos: This one is fun and different. I should probably listen to it more to get all out of it, but Tori rocks it here her own way. 3,5/5

I also have to add that the picture on the video of "La Bas" suits perfectly with the song. Great music.

Goddamn @ not being able to edit

Lisa's voice has even a manly vibe to it at times. She gives me a Tim Buckley-like vibe at some points, like around 5:25-5:32, which really impresses me!

Lol, my bad on missing Perry. Kind of assumed you were going female only. As to why the female voice only is negative, it's not in general, but, for me, female lows are just unlikely to get anything above 3.5. I realise it's all relative, but to my ears very good female lows lose out to very good male lows.

Cobain (Low singing)
5/5 Like that song! Forgot about that performance! Strong lows.

Zack De La Rocha (Climax)
1/5 Just not my type of thing. (Anymore)

Tori Amos (Climax)
1/5 Catchy, but doesn't latch onto my soul like good music does uknow?

Lisa Gerrard (Low singing)
4/5 Not that low. But low enough for her i guess
