James Brown

Post  Starman on Mon Dec 23, 2013 1:47 pm

Voice type: Sex Machine Tenor
Vocal range: E♭2-F7 (So Far)

Significant high notes:

  • F7 (''Sex Machine'' (live))
  • E6 ("Funky President (People It's Bad)")
  • E♭6 ("Funky President (People It's Bad)",  ''I Got You (I Feel Good)''(Sex Machine Today Version))
  • G♯5 ("How Long Darling")
  • G5 ("Let Them Talk", "Have Mercy Baby", "I've Got Money", "Again", "Signed, Sealed and Delivered")
  • F♯5 ("Cold Sweat", "Wonder When You're Coming Home", "Baby, You're Right", "Three Hearts in a Tangle")
  • F5 ("So Long", "I've Got Money", "Mother Popcorn", "The Man in the Glass", "I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me), Pt. 1 & 2", "It Won't Be Me")
  • E5("It's a New Day", "Maybe I'll Understand", "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose", "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World", "Is It Yes or Is It No?", "Any Day Now")
  • E♭5("Bring It Up (Hipster's Avenue)", "Maybe I'll Understand", "I Don't Mind", "Goodbye My Love", "Let a Man Come in and Do the Popcorn", "Brother Rapp, Pts. 1 & 2")
  • D5 ("Baby, You're Right", "I Got You (I Feel Good)", "Brother Rapp, Pts. 1 & 2", "You Don't Have to Go", "Wonder When You're Coming Home")
  • C♯5 ("I Got You (I Feel Good)", "I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me), Pt. 1 & 2", "Have Mercy Baby", "Let Yourself Go", "Neer Your Love So Bad", ")
  • C5 ("Don't Tell It", "It Won't Be Me", "So Long", "Till Then")

Significant low notes:

  • C3 ("Please, Please, Please", "Someone to Talk to")
  • F2("Still")
  • E♭2 ("Peace in the World")

So I was looking through threadless singers and stumbled across this thread.
I'm a massive James Brown fan and I'm going to try and add more to it.
It's going to be a long term WIP. Also, if anybody knows the original maker of this thread, please tell me I want to give them credit for the work done.

the original is heavily based on a range video somewhere in the interwebs. if i remember correctly he gets much higher than G#5 but at the time maxim nd the rest didn't consider those notes to be 'full' so they didn't count them. they were dumb like that

I'll recheck the notes on the thread and see what happens. Since the colour system seems to have gone out the window I guess it really doesn't matter anymore.

Finally a James Brown thread.

3:27 C5

1:07 D5
1:15 Another D5
1:19 A4
2:03 C5

Some pretty sweet notes by a 72 year old man!
James Brown his best vocal runs in my opinion were all from 2000s
He couldn`t scream like he did (Allthough he managed to hit some Full E5s and F5s some how) His singing voice sounded better than ever in my opinion, his vocal runs and the emotion he puts behind it are really stunning. Especially for a man of that age (With 300!! Shows a year, up until his death on christmas eve...)

But he gets the same notes in the studio version.....

I'm pretty sure the studio version of sex machine goes up higher then a C5 (it's been ages since I've heard it)

OMG... offcourse he does..
BUT! He isn`t 32 here (Like he was on the studio version) he`s 72... Thats what makes them significant, for me anyways..

I'll just stick with the studio version. I'm not repeating songs where the live performance has the same note as the studio just because the singer has aged.

I think he gets up to A5 in the Sex Machine Today version from '75.

I found the original range video, he gets up to F#7 apparently...

unfortunately there's no song names or years BUT i did notice a lot of the higher notes seemed like they were live

I'll check it out.
If he sings any lyrics, I might be able to google search the titles. But I'll play it by year.

Some time ago I started collecting notes for him, as the original thread was suffering from a severe case of TRP1.
Can't find my notes at the moment, but I will update the thread once I do.

I'll take a listen to it a little later. I'm finding it hard to find full albums of his music on youtube, i'll get around to the updates a little later.
