Singer for The Moody Blues

Voice Type: Baritone

Significant High Notes:
C5 – "Your Wildest Dreams"
B♭4 - "Forever Autumn" live Top of the Pops 1978, "Ride My See-Saw"
B4 – "Gemini Dream”, “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere”
A4 – "The Eve of War", "Forever Autumn" live Top of the Pops 1978, “Voices In The Sky”
G♯4 – “Ride My See-Saw”, "Question", “Tuesday Afternoon”
G4 – “Blue Guitar”, "The Eve of War", "Forever Autumn", “Gemini Dream”, "Nights In White Satin", "Question", “Your Wildest Dreams”
F4 - “Blue Guitar”, "The Eve of War", "Forever Autumn", “Tuesday Afternoon”, “Your Wildest Dreams”

Significant Low Notes:
D3 - "Forever Autumn"

B2 – "Are You Sitting Comfortably?", “Voices In The Sky”
B♭2 - "Dawn Is A Feeling"

G2 – “Your Wildest Dreams”

One of my favorite singers. Absolutely gorgeous voice, so smooth and light, and a very emotional(!) voice. Especially on "Nights In White Satin", which is probably his finest performance.

When a thread disappears for a year, amazing things can happen. cyclops
Or I just was listening to the harmonies of Moody Blues songs today and realized how high Hayward actually goes.

Well, this is awkward...
The high harmonies in the Moody Blues songs are actually done by their bassist John Lodge. So most of the stuff above A4 is actually Lodge. Sad
Luckily I've been scanning their discography, and I'm sure Hayward will have other notes that are around there.

Doesn't "nights in white satin" go to G4?

As In "OH how I love you" or is it an A4??

My pitching ain't so good on this song

Edit: Nevermind, they are G4s.

While this thread is temporarily resurrected, I want to post a few links from a famous musical adaptation of The War of The Worlds featuring Richard Burton on spoken vocals and Justin singing on these two songs:

Hayward's parts are from 6:10-7:47, with Burton's lovely voice being sandwiched Hayward's parts. Lots of F4s and E4s during the verses, with a G4 on the second "The chances of anything coming from Mars" in each verse, and a final A4 in the backing vocals around 7:44.

A fantastic song here. Hayward hits D3s in the verses, while getting G4s and F4s in the choruses and pre-chorus parts. Also dips down to C3 (Stop the press!) at 3:51. Though I like this song, I prefer this live version:

always thought nights in white satin was a G4, I don't recall him hitting any A4s in that song aha

Lovely tone of voice, very emotive

2:38 C#3 and D3. I've waited for him to sing the high notes at the end (it would've been G4 and A4 in this key)

0:48 B2, 3:08 F#4 and D3 afterwards.

The only thing that makes me wary towards counting the backing vocals is the fact that John Lodge does most of the higher harmonies in the Moodies' material. I had that happen with "Ride My See Saw," "Lovely To See You," and "Lazy Day."

I've listened to the live version of the song and you're right it's definitely not Justin Hayward.
I thought to myself that if he isn't singing lead he must be doing the back vocals. Didn't know somebody else was doing the high harmonies. Pardon my mistake!

Is the C5 in Your Wildest Dreams lead vocals or backing vocals? I can't remember where he hit it

Lead Vocals, I think. If they're backing vocals best not to count them.
Honestly, I'm not even sure there is a C5, rofl
