Stephen Stills

Post  Holsety on Tue Sep 17, 2013 2:58 pm

Vocal Range: F♯2 - F♯5

Significant High Notes

F♯5 ("Long Time Gone" live Altamont*, "Mr. Soul" live Woodstock)
F5 ("Black Queen")
E5 ("Long Time Gone" live, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Black Queen", "Suite Judy Blue Eyes")
E♭5 ("49 Bye-Byes/America's Children", "Old Times Good Times")
D5 ("Long Time Gone" live, "Special Care", "Love The One You're With" live 4WS, "Go Back Home")
C♯5 ("Everybody I Love You")
C5 ("49 Reasons", "Bluebird", "Rock N Roll Woman", "To A Flame")
B4 ("Woodstock", "White Nigger", "What To Do", "Love The One You're With" live 4WS, "Flying On The Ground is Wrong")
A4 ("49 Bye-Byes", "Questions", "The Doctor Will See You Now" JRT demo, "Church (Part of Someone)", "Anyway", "Hot Dusty Roads")
G4 ("Go Back Home", "Church (Part of Someone)", "Old Times Good Times", "Sit Yourself Down", "Tell Me Why" live 1970)

Significant Low Notes

D3 ("Bluebird", "Bound To Fall", "We Are Not Helpless")
C3 ("Everydays", "Wooden Ships" JRT demo, "To a Flame")
B2 ("Everybody's Talkin", "Country Girl (I Think You're Pretty)")
A2 ("Wooden Ships" JRT demo, "Everybody's Talkin", "We Are Not Helpless", "Treetop Flyer" JRT demo)
F♯2 ("Black Queen" live)

* - This note could be a G5 as well, because the version on YouTube is a bit lower in pitch than on the studio version. It's possible that they performed it in this key, though.

...................................................................................................
*Italics mark non-melodic notes.

Member of Buffalo Springfield, Crosby/Stills/Nash, Manassas, in addition to solo work. More acclaimed as a guitarist (though sometimes labelled underrated); however before the whole snorting coke thing got to him, he could also sing. These days you'll find his voice is pretty much shot. This personally worries me, considering he has solo dates coming up this year.

Damn..

Is the "Long Time Gone" live E5 from the performance with Tom Jones? If so, I wouldn't colour that blue.

Although........ Colours, eww.

I may need to look into the new format, considering this thread is still small enough.

edit: I remember most of the notes in the F♯4 to the G♯4 being lead vocals, but most of the Buffalo Springfield notes were purple.

I listened to "Delilah" earlier and I noticed that you do a very similar bluesy trail off some of your phrases as he does in that song. Sounded pretty similar to me, I can definitely tell that's at least a part of your influence vocally.

That's always a positive thing to hear! Guess I've been to exposed to that much of Jones' music, the discography of +50 albums is surely going to start feeling somewhere.

I'd say so hehe.  It's definitely an awesome style of singing.  That's gotta be one of (if not the) the most powerful voice in contemporary music.  (not to derail from Stephen Stills lol)

Steve here could use a guitar thread. I wish I knew 10 oh his solos, though.

There's a reason the post has omitted voice type.

The OP does say I'm not using colors, regardless.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic. I don't think it transferred in text form though! Tiphat

Not that it matters, but will anyone smite me for calling this guy a tenor?
