Test Round #2 commences (as well as Round #1 results)

Post  MrToddington on Mon Jul 29, 2013 3:19 pm

Well, Test Round #1 was really successful. It was good to see everyone putting in their (varied) opinions.

Results:
Winners are established by whoever has the higher average rating in their match-up.
Rodney Razorshorts defeated MrDevilman (4.18 vs 3.40)
MooseyFate defeated Pepe Forever (3.92 vs 3.85)
Whackooyzero defeated Rustyfo (3.35 vs 2.63)
Celice defeated The Great Heroins (2.95 vs 2.45)
Sandblasted defeated B6 (3.50 vs 2.98)
失格 - Shikkaku - defeated Fawfulhasfury (3.78 vs 3.03)
Blue Saint defeated Inhibitions (3.00 vs 2.67)
Monocus defeated Holsety (3.88 vs 3.17)
Notes:

  • Two ratings were discarded from the Monocus vs Holsety match-up due to missing ratings. This was because of Holsety's late entry for category #1 of the round. From here on in, no submission will be counted as an automatic 1/5.
  • Ratings were rounded up on occasion. Any ratings of 3.75, for instance, were rounded up to 4. From now on, please don't give any ratings more detailed than x.5
  • Any ratings less than 1 were automatically rounded to 1. Please do not give any ratings less than 1 from now on. Smile

The standings have been updated to reflect these results. You can check out that via this link.

Test Round 2:
This week's categories are:
1. Coolest sustained note(s) - show off a clip that presents impressive sustained notes. Please keep these clips under 2 minutes, but any length other than that is fine.
2. Best glissando - find some cool vocal slides (keep clips under 1 minute, ideally) and show them off.
3. Most beautiful tone - tastefulness is key here. Show off a clip with one of your vocalists displaying their more gentle sounds. Try and show clips at least 30 seconds, but edit them if they're longer than 2 minutes.
These categories were somewhat randomly selected. We need more categories though, so please, keep suggesting them. I'm a tough critic though...

This week's match-ups are...
The Great Heroins vs MrDevilman
Celice vs B6
Fawfulhasfury vs Blue Saint
Whackooyzero vs Inhibitions
Rodney Razorshorts vs Sandblasted
Pepe Forever vs Rustyfo
Holsety vs 失格 - Shikkaku -
Monocus vs MooseyFate

Your submissions are due on August 5th, at 12pm UTC. Please send one PM, containing your post. The PM will be copied exactly to the match-up thread, so please avoid adding any comments you don't want seen in the actual thread. Please number each category's entry, add who the vocalist is, what the song title is, and a brief (one sentence) description about the clip. Good luck!

How long should the note be, ideally, to be accepted as sustained?

Well you could use many sustained notes, or one longer one, but it's up to you. Aim for something at least 5 seconds regardless. Razz

Congrats to Moosey on his thight victory. You just can't win against Serj xP

So,about the next round, this time we can show fragments of different songs/ performances or we're still limited to one song only?

Well, in 2 out of 3 categories you kind of slaughtered him, but in average scores, serj always got 5/5, so he won. I believe the winner should be the one with 2 out of 3 categories won, but anyway, this system is not bad at all either Smile

Isn't that how it was said to be be:

Are we supposed to use the same three singers we chose before?
If so, that is fine, just curious.

In the same song, Like last time? If not, I'll have to make arrangments.

edit: well, last time it had to be one continuous clip, but whatever..

Eeep! I messed up here...

I really should have adjusted that. Here's the instance where it happened:

I discussed with Garric on this and came to the conclusion that going by the total average might be best. What do you guys think? I'll adjust the scores if you prefer it way I originally wrote down.

We're still testing, so it doesn't really matter yet, or does it?
Maybe we can gather 2-3 possible systems and have a vote on them?

I personally would prefer the fights being decided by whoever wins most categories.
Otherwise you could win by being exceptionally good in one category while being mediocre or bad in the other two.
EXAMPLE FIGHT (A | B):
Category 1: 4.5 | 3.5
Category 2: 2.8 | 3.3
Category 3: 3.1 | 3.3
Result: 'A' wins 3.46 to 3.37 despite losing in two categories

Alternatively you could gather the scores on a per singer basis, while the actual fights are decided as originally stated.
You'd have two championships that way like the constructors/drivers championships in F1.
Most successful singers (by average score) and most successful users (by wins).

Post  Celice on Wed Jul 31, 2013 10:03 pm

I was going to suggest something similar. I'd like to have a league table of all the singers' placements by average score.
As for the match-up results, I'm fine with either system.
We're still testing, so it doesn't really matter yet, or does it?
That's the good thing about testing. If this were the proper competition we'd be committed to sticking to the original rules as published, but since it's not, we can change stuff as we go along and try it both ways if people want to. I'd like to know which way we're doing it for this round though, since it might affect my choice of clips, though it's not really that important since we're just testing.

Can someone give me an example of vocal glissando that would get decent ratings, perferably with a vocalist nobody has? Are we talking Robert Plant's air-raid siren screams, or what?

By "cool sounding" I would assume it would be something either long(ish) and dramatic or sliding up to an impressive high or vibratoed note, this is the first example I could think of for the former category (2:55):
