Richard Manuel

Post  KeithMoonIsGod on Mon Jul 15, 2013 2:43 pm

Vocal Range: D2-F5

Significant High Notes:
F5 - "I Shall Be Released"
E5 - "I Shall Be Released"
C♯5 - "The Weight"
C5 - "I Shall Be Released", "Tears of Rage", "Tears of Rage", "To Kingdom Come"
B4 - "Georgia On My Mind", "Tears of Rage"
A4 - "Tears of Rage"
G4 - "Georgia On My Mind", "Tears of Rage"
F4 - "Lonesome Suzie"

Significant Low Notes:
C3 - "Lonesome Suzie"
A2 - "Georgia On My Mind"
F2 - "Georgia On My Mind"
D2 - "The Rumor"

One of my favorite singers, and the best singer in The Band. Had a lovely high register which unfortunately disappeared after a few albums, but he also had a strong low register. "Tears of Rage" is one of my favorite vocal performances, I've never heard so much pain and beauty in a vocal performance. Also had a similar voice to Ray Charles, shown in his "Georgia On My Mind" cover.

He's also got some awesome D2's on "The Rumor", off of Stage Fright that he also pulls off live!

What are some of his best vocal performances? I've always wanted to check Manuel out.

"Tears of Rage" is definitely one of his best. "Lonesome Suzie" is a good one too, and in fact most of the stuff he sings on the first few Band albums are some of his best. His "Georgia On My Mind" cover is quite good too, but it's not as powerful as some other versions. "I Shall Be Released" is one of his most famous performances, but it's just alright really. That's all I can think of for now, but I think of any later, I'll let you know. Smile

I've got a question. Is the entirety of "I Shall be Released" sung in his falsetto voice? Or is that some kind of mix?

Oh, I always thought those were Rick Danko, but listening again, those sound like Manuel right enough. Danko also had quite a high voice, I guess that's what confused me, hah.

Danko is singing the middle part there, I think.  He does have the A4s on the last verse (to get back to miss fanny, you know she's the only one).

Full A4's

He sings some G4s and full (but very strained) A4's on 'Long Distance Operator (outtake)'.
