Dan Nigro (As Tall as Lions)

Post  SpiralStatic on Thu Jul 11, 2013 9:35 am

Voice Type: Tenor
Sung range: E2-Eb5-F5

Significant high notes

F5 ("Stab City" live)
E♭5 ("Love, Love, Love")
D5 ("Love, Love, Love" live)
C♯5 ("Stab City")
C5 ("1878")
B4 ("Summer", "Milk and Honey", "Be Here Now")
B♭4 ("O Holy Night", "We're the Ones That Keep You Warm at Night")

Significant low notes:

E♭3 ("Stab City" live)
C♯3 ("Be Here Now")
B♭2 ("Maybe I'm Just Tired")
A♭2 ("Sleepyhead")
G2 ("Kickin' Myself")
E2 ("Sleepyhead")

AKA god of all things vocal (and lead singer of "As Tall As Lions" and solo project "Blocks")

Can anyone confirm that it's Dan singing in "Sleepyhead"?
It sounds like him but I've never heard him go that low in any other songs, though it does have that quiet whispery tone you'd expect from a tenor singing in that range.

E♭5 ("Stab City" live)

I'm guessing this is a mistake...Question

If you want, just add spaces in front of the name so you don't have to add filler text to it at the end.

Also, as a standard, every thread I've seen uses B♭, C♯, E♭, F♯, and G♯, so you might want to do the same.

Yessssss. Yess. Yes. This my shit. All the girls stomp your feet like this. Laughing

This has some similar vocals to Love, Love, Love. He hits... Maybe a C5 in that song IIRC. My absolute favorite.

Really depressing, but there's some superb mid-range stuff. Love him and the band because they are truly unique. The harmonies. Good God. If they're him... Take me, I am finished on this planet.
edit: he also gets rather whispery in "Maybe I'm Just Tired". I've yet to listen to Sleepyhead, but will be heading that way.

I'm going according to what the notes are in the key of the song, I can change them if this is really the norm but it's musically inaccurate.

Idk who does the backing vocals, but that sounds like a solid Bb2 in the lead vocal @ 0:40?

I've also seen A# (cba to copy and paste. Bite me) as well. I think keeping them in the key is the best.

And. Oh. My. God. This guy can go from singing almost lullaby-esque to THAT Shocked. asfdsgjdlfgkhjgh;. He's Indie Rock's Pavarotti.

O Danny boy, your cords, your cords are treasure. O Danny boy, you precious, precious tenor.
........
Oh, Danny boy, oh, Danny boy, I love you so.

Yeah, I think that E2 could be by him...

And taking into consideration parts of Stab City... I think there's a slim chance that some of the angelic choir bits could be him. I mean, this is speaking in a perfect world and one of all knowing. They're far too edited to really count them, but... Does anyone wonder about the ifs? Laughing

I'm just saying, you'll be asked to change them later, anyway.

Yeah that's a Bb2, knew I remember hearing that note somewhere from their self-titled. There's also a lower note around there but it might be fry.

Here's some amazing angelic backing vocals by him here:

He might be going down to the A2 here, but he's also layered with the lead singer from Envy on The Coast here so it may just be him doing that part.

Oh, also completely forgot he does some AMAZING C5's here on track from The Dear Hunter (Dan come in after 1:35)

Both bands are absolutely amazing BTW, if you're into ATAL you'll probably love them.

I think most of us know that, for example, A♭2 and G♯2 are enharmonic, so I don't really see a problem here. I suppose we could list "A♭2 / G♯2" etc, which probably makes sense if multiple notes of the same pitch are listed, but might look a bit odd where there is only one. I'm happy to leave it up to the OP anyway.

No point listing both obviously, though I do find G# particularly jarring since you're gonna be seeing it as Ab a lot more often than G#
I agree completely with C# F# Eb and Bb though, but again none of this really matters since we all know what they mean regardless
