Wow, 4 pages later and we still only have 2 low notes from him. Confused

A2s, B2s, and C3s throughout I believe, especially in the choruses. 0:59, and 1:40 are good examples.

Sounds like a very breathy A2. I could be off though.

Damn I wish those highs note from Lady were louder so we can really hear them. I have a great feeling that Tommy is hitting those notes so well and I really wish I could just hear them clearly in the mix.

I don't hear anything significant, as far as lows go.

OK, let me start by saying I am no means an expert on vocals and vocal technique. I always thought that James Young sang a lot of the highest harmonies in the band, but it's clear that all four can sing very high.

But I can categorically, 100% say that Tommy did not sing the high background vocals on the studio version of Lady - because he wasn't even in the band.

Lady was released on Styx II in 1973, recorded sometime in '72-'73. Tommy didn't join the band until '76 for Crystal Ball. So while they may have used that song as a measuring stick, and he very well might have sung high harmonies live, it's not him on the studio version.

Actually, live I'd say it's Tommy. If you watch the 1976 and 1977 shows, James Young's background vocals are all very similar and high in the mix.

Starting at about 2:30 it's pretty clear who is singing what part. Dennis almost always takes the low harmony in the choruses of Styx songs. Watching this and the 1977 show Chuck rarely sings background vocals.

Again, the 1976 show, at 6:53 you can see that Tommy has stepped away from his mic and you can clearly see James singing his part. In both of those concerts, once you key in on James' tone it's easy to pick out. He tends to sing the more static harmonizing line, where Tommy's harmonies are harmonizing the melody, with Dennis filling in the low end. It's also clear which line Chuck sings earlier in this video.

On a non-singing note, it's interesting that guitar solos that I always thought were James are Tommy and vice-versa. Based on liner notes I always thought Tommy played the more melodic solos and James the more rock solos, but it's almost reversed. James also hits a lot of bum notes in his solos, and his 'improvised' solos are particularly uninspired. It was also interesting to see James playing keyboards at the beginning of Fooling Yourself, doubling Dennis' line.
