Jesse Lacey (Brand New)

Post  Static Prevails on Sun Apr 28, 2013 9:57 am

Current status: UNFINISHED

Voice type: Tenor
Vocal range: E2-B♭5

Significant high notes:
B♭5 (''Guernica'')
F♯5 (''Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't'')
D5 (''Sink'', ''Limousine'')
C♯5 (''Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades'', ''The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows'')
C5 (''Failure By Design'', ''Logan to Government Center'', ''Sowing Season (Yeah)'')
B4 (''Bought a Bride'', ''Degausser'', ''Jesus Christ'', ''Not the Sun'', ''Sowing Season (Yeah)'', ''The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows'', ''You Won't Know'')
B♭4 (''Failure By Design'', ''Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die'', ''Jude Law and a Semester Abroad'', ''Last Chance To Lose Your Keys'', ''Magazines'', ''Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis'', ''Seventy Times 7'', ''Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades'', ''Sudden Death in Carolina'', ''Tautou'', ''The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows'')
A4 (''At the Bottom'', ''Luca'', ''Noro'')

Significant low notes:
A2 (''At the Bottom'', ''Limousine'')
G♯2 (''Jaws Theme Swimming'')
G2 (''Sowing Season (Yeah)'')
F♯2 (''Jesus Christ'', ''Millstone'', ''Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't'')
F2 (''You Stole'')
E2 (''In a Jar'', ''Millstone'', ''You Stole'')

I was unsure over whether to list him as a high baritone or a low tenor, but I'm going with low tenor for now. I still have a lot of their album Your Favorite Weapon to notewatch, but I thought I'd write down what I've got so far.

.......................................................
*Orange marks notes with questionable registers: absolutely no use figuring out these.
*Blue marks probable non-modal notes.
*Red marks extremely bad, unimpressive or unintentional notes.
*Italics mark non-sung notes.

Damn, I always wanted to notewatch him.

+ Clearly a LT, he's got LT highs.

2:40...he just sounds like a low tenor. Raspy Bb4's here, and C#5 in harmonies of each chorus...

Yeah, the highs threw me off. His highs are undeniably those of a low tenor but his lows confuse me a little. I'll change it for now though. I'm bad at hearing harmonies, so thanks for catching the C#5s. Smile

In fact, the harmonies are at this place: "The reasons that I had to believe..." and "It used to be the reason I breathe"

The harmonies are one fourth higher than the main singing. Smile

Thanks! Just wondering, can you hear any significant in the harmonies of Limousine around 2 minutes in on the line ''Baby's frequency not strong enough''? It sounds strained, but I can't make out the note.

Thanks, added. I also found C5s in the backing on Failure By Design, on ''We don't believe in filler, baby.

C5 in the harmonies of sowing season, in the break "It takes a while to grow anything" and "Warm it with your hands".
These harmonies are somewhat quiet but my ears hear them...

Okay, I've added them. There are falsetto B4s in the verses of Not the Sun (''Like some...''), and then shouted B4s on ''Just pretend''. Then in ''Be my babe'' the harmonies reach something like C#5, but I can't tell for sure.

Ok for the B4's I hear them, but I don't think the harmonies really touch on C#5. I hear B4's. I can be wrong though

I hear a quick slide up on on 'babe, but that may be the Lacey fanboy inside. It's hard to tell.

Maybe C5 at best, but I don't think it touches on C#5.

N.B: Jesse Lacey may be confused with an HB because he got a neutral, "not-particularly-tenorish" vocal timbre, starting from his easy lows till his second passaggio.
His tenor colour only reveals there, from F#4 and higher

I love Brand New. They are my favorite band. I seen them a few days ago too. He's incredible live. But I was note watching him like 2 weeks ago out of interest since I'm always covering their songs. I have their whole discography so I'll just keep updating, but here is all of their first album "Your Favorite Weapon". It's crazy that I was going to start a thread. Glad they are getting recognition here. In Love

HIS LOWS ARE HARDLY IN THE SIGNIFICANT RANGE. So I usually put down the lowest note in the song if it's lower 3rd octave at least.

Your Favorite Weapon

The Shower Scene - G#4.
Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - Bb4
Sudden Death in Carolina - Bb4 G#4
Mix Tape - Eb3 G#4
Failure By Design - Eb3 G4 Bb4 C5
Last chance To Lose Your Keys - G4 G#4
Logan To Government Center - G#4 C5
The No Seatbelt Song - Bb2 C3
Seventy Times 7 - C3 G#4 Bb4
Secondary - F#4
Magazines - G#4 Bb4
Soco Amaretto Lime - Bb3 C3 C#3 G#4

Enjoy.

Just finished Deja Entendu. I know you guys did some songs I've done but oh well, at least they are all confirmed.

Deja Entendu

Tautou - Eb3(Like a stone in the SEA) G4(I'm SINKING like a stone) Bb4(I'm BURNING like a bridge - Harmony)
Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades - C3(This is so messed UP) Bb4(The art of GROWing up) C#5(Chorus Harmonies)
I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spinlight - F#4 (We WON'T let you win)
Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't - F#2(Don't you dare forGET) F#5(This is the rise and the FALL)
The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows - C#3 Bb4 C#5(Chorus Harmonies)
The Boy Who Blocket His Own Shot - F#4(YOU ARE CALM and reposed)
Jaws Theme Swimming - G#2(If you're leaving just let me KNOW) G#4(And we LEARN) C#5(Chorus harmony during the G#4s very faintly screamed)
Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis - C3(fake the way I hold YOU) Bb4(I will LIE awake)
Guernica - Bb2(Worry and wake the ones YOU love) G#4(Half the world aWAY at times like these) Bb5 (Keep you safe and SOUND - Screamed note)
Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die - Bb2(The Pen, the page, the PAPER) Bb4(Our FRIENDS speak out in our defense - Harmony)
Play Crack The Sky - G#4(this stories old but it going on AND on - Harmony)

At least we got some 2nd octave lows.

Yeah Brand New is my all time favorite. Such good songwriters. I'll notewatch the last two albums at some point :p
